Reddit Pix was my second attempt at making an app for Windows Phone. It’s a quick way to browse image content on Reddit.
Coming from my primarily Apple background, learning C#/Visual Studio and Windows Phone development was pretty interesting . Microsoft’s development tools are absolute pleasure to use.
That said, it would have been a lot more fun were it not for my shitty development environment: I developed the application while living in Saigon, on my trusty ol’ 2011 Macbook Air 11″ with 128 GB disk space and 4 GB RAM.
I didn’t have enough disk space to install Windows via Bootcamp (or in a VM on the Mac), so I needed to settle for installing it on an external USB 2.0 drive.
Unfortunately, there were issues installing Windows 8 on an external drive and booting it on the Macbook, so I had to run it through a VM.
Visual Studio running on Windows via VMWare Fusion on an external USB drive was about as slow as it sounds. Combine this with the pitiful amount of RAM, and you can imagine the pain.
Many times I had to kill all processes or restart the Mac just so VMWare would have enough RAM to boot Windows.
Other than all that, Windows Phone development was a pleasure.
Unfortunately, even though the app had media attention and great reviews, Windows Phone’s small market just didn’t justify it for me to either buy a Windows machine, or continue dealing with my shit setup.
